An Apple a Day – for your pet?

FullSizeRenderI do not have children so my pets are my children.  Some people like their pets more than their kids.  Just kidding. Not really.  In any case, if you have a pet, let’s assume they are near and dear to your heart.

For a long time, I thought nothing of the store bought food I was feeding my pets.  However, I soon realized, pets aren’t the only ones on the SAD – Standard American Diet.  My take on pet food changed many years ago when my two beloved cats were diagnosed with chronic renal failure.  After seeing a wonderful holistic vet, I cleared out the toxins from their living environment and switched them to a homemade raw diet.  What a difference.  They lived another 12 years than they should have according to the conventional vet.  That’s another long story for another time, but my pets getting sick actually started me on my path to healthy, clean living.

Years later, I still feed my pets a raw diet but I buy it now from a pet health food store (so much easier!). Feel free to contact me directly if you would like information on the company I use.

In addition to their regular food, I give my pets cooked vegetables every day and a little fruit occasionally as treats. Ella, my long haired chihuahua pictured above, loves cooked sweet potato, green beans, squash and carrots as well as blueberries and small bits of apples. The cats as well. The only drawback is they hear chopping in the kitchen and assume it’s for them!

Note: My pets are medicine-free but if your pets are on any type of medication, you should first consult your veterinarian before adding anything new to their diet. All beings are unique and tolerate foods and substances differently.  Always do your own research online from multiple sources.
